To me, birthdays nowadays seem to equalize public humiliation on facebook, money, huge parties and getting hammered - which is somewhat great. However, birthdays are not about being the center of the attention, spoiled with cake and presents, or treated like a royal for a day. These are just bonus features. Birthdays are supposed to make you feel grateful; It's a reminder saying: "You've been given another year filled with experience and memories." If I were to directly translate the way Norwegians wish each other a "happy birthday", it would look like this: "Congratulation with the day (Gratulerer med dagen)." It's like we're saying: "Hey, congrats, you survived another year!" I think the English expression sounds more friendly and warm, but the Norwegians got a fair point. Some will say certain birthdays are more important than others; like every number followed by a zero, or the year you can take your driving license, legally drink and become your own boss. I disagree. I think every year should be celebrated and regarded with the same enthusiasm and joy. |
At least, chew on this: Every birthday is a privilege some people never get or will have.
